U.S. Virgin Islands – Senior citizens and their caregivers are being urged to remain vigilant following reports of a phone scam in which fraudsters, both men and women, are targeting older adults through landline and cell phone calls.
Scammers falsely claim that the victim has won a prize, such as a truck, car, or cash. The victim is then told they must pay various fees—such as insurance, taxes, or processing fees before they can receive the prize.
Victims are instructed to send money through MoneyGram, purchase gift cards, or withdraw funds from their bank and transfer the money to the scammer.
In some cases, the scammer provides the victim with a name and mailing address, instructing them to write and mail a check. Investigations have revealed that the individual at the listed address is often another senior citizen who has also been deceived. That person is instructed by the scammer to cash the check and forward the money, believing they are helping facilitate the delivery of legitimate prize winnings.
This fraudulent scheme often continues until victims have lost significant amounts of money or exhausted their savings.
If you receive one of these calls:
- Hang up immediately. Do not engage in conversation with the caller.
- Inform a trusted family member or caregiver about the call.
- Never send money, purchase gift cards, or provide personal or financial information to someone claiming you have won a prize.
Family members and caregivers are encouraged to:
- Check in regularly with your elderly loved ones.
- If they mention receiving a call stating they have won a prize or gift, reassure them that it is a scam.
- Review their financial activity if appropriate, as some seniors may genuinely believe the caller is legitimate and may not disclose financial losses immediately.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized by this scam is encouraged to contact their local police department and report the incident as soon as possible.
