Virgin Islands Police Department Reminds Residents of Firearms Licensing Requirements

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) Firearms License Division reminds residents of the requirements, procedures, and fees associated with obtaining and renewing a firearms license since the enactment of Bill No. 36-0144 (Act No. 9113) on June 24th, 2026. The Department also seeks to address and correct misinformation regarding firearms licensing requirements in the United States Virgin Islands.

The Firearms License Division encourages all applicants to obtain information directly from VIPD to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Required Documents

Applicants seeking a firearms license must appear in person and provide the following:

  • Photograph taken by VIPD during application processing
  • Birth certificate or other acceptable proof of date of birth
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship, naturalization documents, or Alien Registration Card, where applicable
  • Virgin Islands Police Department Record Check issued within the preceding thirty (30) days
  • Valid fingerprint card obtained from the VIPD Records Division
  • Certificate of completion of an approved firearms safety course
  • Valid government-issued photo identification or U.S. passport

Only original applications will be accepted. Photocopied applications will not be processed. Applicants must personally submit completed applications and present original supporting documents along with legible photocopies. Certified copies issued by the originating agency may be accepted in lieu of original documents.

Firearms License Fees

Applicants are required to submit the applicable fees at the time of application:

  • Initial Firearms License Application Fee: $150.00
  • Firearm Registration Fee: $50.00 per application
  • Firearms License Renewal Fee: $50.00 every five (5) years

Important: The Fifty Dollar ($50.00) firearm registration fee is assessed per application, regardless of the number of firearms being registered. Applicants may include multiple firearms on an initial registration application, as well as on supplemental registration forms, without incurring an additional registration fee.

Payments may be made by cash, money order, or credit card. Money orders must be made payable to the Government of the Virgin Islands.

Renewal Requirements

Applicants seeking renewal of a firearms license must also provide a certificate of completion of a handgun training course completed within the ten (10) years preceding the renewal application. The certificate must bear the original signature of the instructor.
