St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands – The Virgin Islands Police Department Traffic Bureau in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Office of Highway Safety (VIOHS) will be conducting a Saturated Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Patrol Initiative beginning on March 13, 2025, through the month of April as part of its ongoing effort to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with traffic laws in the district of St. Croix.
During this initiative, officers will be increasing patrols in high-risk areas to identify and remove impaired drivers from the road. Enforcement efforts will also target violations such as distracted driving, failure to wear seatbelts, unregistered and uninsured vehicles, expired driver licenses, missing front and rear license plates to name a few.
Impaired driving remains a leading cause of serious and fatal crashes. Law enforcement is urging drivers to make responsible choices by designating a sober driver if they have been drinking. Additionally, distracted drivers such as texting, using a mobile device, eating, or engaging in any activity that takes away from the road continue to be a major safety concern. Distracted driving can be just as dangerous as impaired driving, increasing the risk of crashes that can result in injuries or fatalities. Drivers are reminded to always keep their full attention on the road and to avoid behaviors that compromise their safety and that of others.
The Saturated DUI Patrol Initiatives is aimed to deter risky driving behaviors by increasing the presence of law enforcement officers on the roadways. This proactive enforcement effort seeks to prevent impaired driving, enhance public safety, and reduce the risk of crashes. Motorists are encouraged to follow all traffic laws, keep their vehicles safe and up to date, and make responsible choices behind the wheel. The community plays a vital role in promoting road safety and is encouraged to report reckless or impaired drivers to local authorities.
Together, we can work toward a safer and more responsible driving culture in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
