U.S. Virgin Islands – The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) is reminding the public that closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras placed on public roads, highways, and intersections across the territory are vital government assets designed exclusively to enhance public safety, deter criminal activity, and aid in rapid emergency response.
Damaging, destroying, disabling, or in any way tampering with these surveillance systems or any other government property is a serious criminal offense.
The VIPD, in coordination with local and federal prosecutors, will enforce a policy of zero tolerance. Perpetrators will be pursued and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Offenders who target or interfere with public safety infrastructure face severe penalties under both federal and territorial statutes:
- Federal Law (18 U.S.C. § 1361 & § 1362): Under federal statutes governing malicious mischief, willfully injuring, committing depredation against, or destroying property owned or utilized by government entities carries heavy penalties. If the damage to property exceeds $100, the offense is classified as a felony punishable by fines up to $250,000, up to 10 years imprisonment, or both. Additionally, under 18 U.S.C. § 1362, willfully damaging or interfering with government-utilized communication systems carries severe federal felony penalties.
- Local USVI Law (14 V.I.C. Chapter 63): Under the Virgin Islands Code, malicious mischief and the destruction of public property are strictly prosecuted. Pursuant to 14 V.I.C. § 1262*(Destruction of highways, roads, and related infrastructure) and 14 V.I.C. § 1266 (Destruction of property), individuals who maliciously injure or destroy property face steep fines, restitution costs to replace damaged equipment, and significant jail time.
These camera networks belong to the people of the Virgin Islands. They serve as a critical layer of protection for law-abiding citizens, aid in tracking reckless drivers, and provide vital evidence to take violent offenders off our streets. Vandalizing these systems directly threatens the safety of your family, your neighbors, and your community.
Note to Parents and Guardians: Under local laws, parents or legal guardians can be held financially and civilly liable for the destructive actions, vandalism, and property damage caused by minors.
The VIPD urges anyone with information regarding the tampering or destruction of public safety cameras to step forward. If you witness acts of vandalism or suspicious activity near public infrastructure, report it immediately by calling 911, Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
