VIRGIN ISLANDS POLICE DEPARTMENT URGES RESIDENTS TO EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION ON ROADWAYS DUE TO FLOODING CONDITIONS

U.S. Virgin Islands – The Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) is urging all residents to exercise extreme caution while traveling on the territory’s roadways as a result of the current hazardous weather conditions and ongoing flood warnings.

In alignment with Governor Albert Bryan Jr.’s directive, all public schools and government offices are closed today for non-essential employees. Residents are strongly encouraged to remain indoors and avoid all non-essential travel until conditions improve.

VIPD officers are actively patrolling and assessing road conditions across all districts and are working closely with the Department of Public Works to identify and respond to areas experiencing significant water buildup or other hazards.

FLOOD SAFETY TIPS FOR MOTORISTS:

  • Do not drive through flooded areas. A few inches of water can cause loss of control or stall a vehicle.
  • Reduce your speed and increase following distance. Wet roads reduce traction and increase stopping distance.
  • Avoid driving at night when it’s harder to recognize flood dangers.
  • Stay informed. Monitor local news and weather updates for real-time information on road closures and emergency instructions.

The Virgin Islands Police Department will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve. Please monitor official government channels and local news for the latest information.

For emergencies, call 911 immediately. Non-emergency assistance can be reached at (340) 774-2211 (St. Thomas/St. John) or (340) 778-2211 (St. Croix).

Stay safe. Stay informed. Stay indoors.
