Safety Event Records 100% Error Rate for Child Restraints

U.S. Virgin Islands – During the Father’s Day car seat safety check on Saturday, June 20th, the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD)/Office of Highway Safety (OHS) and its team of Child Passenger Technicians (CPSTs) found misuse issues with every car seat inspected.

“Car seats will only prevent crash injuries and fatalities when used according to manufacturer’s instructions,” explained Denise Gomes, OHS Occupant Protection Program Manager. “Many well-intentioned caregivers install and use car seats without consulting the manual. Our technicians are trained to assist motorists with the safe installation and use of these life-saving devices. We applaud these caregivers for taking a proactive approach to their children’s safety.” Child passengers left the event riding safely while Father’s Day gifts were provided to participating fathers.

Another car seat safety check will be held on Saturday, June 27th, at the Omar Brown, Sr. Fire Station on St. Thomas from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Motorists with children are urged to take advantage of the free community event. For more information on child passenger safety and child restraints, please contact the Virgin Islands Office of Highway Safety through Director Daphne O’Neal at daphne.oneal@vipd.vi.gov, or Occupant Protection Program Manager, Denise Gomes, at denise.gomes@vipd.vi.gov, or via telephone at (340) 473-7383.
