New Year, New Decisions: Choose Safety on the Roads

U.S. Virgin Islands – The VI Police Department (VIPD)/Office of Highway Safety (VIOHS) reminds road users that making safe choices on the roadways reduces the risk for crash-related injuries and fatalities for themselves and for others. With over 5,000 crashes logged annually in the territory over the last 3 years, motorists must take active responsibility to improve safety for road users.

Common crash contributors include ignoring the rules of the road, excessive speed, distracted driving and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Unfortunately, consequences from these risk-taking behaviors have impact beyond the offender. Defensive driving skills like remaining alert, anticipating hazards, maintaining safe spacing and wearing appropriate restraints (seat belts and car safety seats for children under age 8) can help to avoid collisions and improve crash outcomes. Motorists must also increase caution when operating near pedestrians and cyclists. VIPD Traffic Commanders urge the community to slow down, adhere to the rules of the road, and to actively choose safety.

For more traffic safety information, contact the Virgin Islands Office of Highway Safety through Director O’Neal at daphne.oneal@vipd.vi.gov, or Ms. Denise Gomes at denise.gomes@vipd.vi.gov. You may also contact the office via telephone at (340) 712-6073 or (340) 473-7383.
