Governor Bryan Signs Proclamation Declaring April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

U.S. Virgin Islands – In a move to increase public awareness and reduce the dangers of distracted driving, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has proclaimed April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, reinforcing the territory’s commitment to safer roads and responsible driving.

Distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of traffic-related incidents and fatalities nationwide, yet it is entirely preventable. The Virgin Islands Police Department/Office of Highway (VIPD/OHS) encourages residents to actively promote safe driving habits by staying alert and eliminate distractions behind the wheel.

“Distracted driving is preventable, but its consequences can be devastating,” VIPD Commissioner, Mario Brooks stated. “No text, call, or moment of inattention is worth a life.”

The proclamation reminds all drivers to stay focused and avoid distractions, including:

  • Texting or using handheld devices while driving
  • Eating or drinking behind the wheel
  • Adjusting the radio, GPS, or other in-car devices
  • Engaging in conversations that divert attention from the road
  • Failing to pay attention to traffic signals and signs

Even a split second of distraction can change lives forever. Drivers are called to stay focused, put their phones away, and make safety their top priority, this month and every time they’re behind the wheel.

Stay Focused, Stay Safe- Just Drive!
