
St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands — On Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 2:02pm, 911 received a call reporting that a truck had run off of the roadway, it had torn down the power lines, and the occupants were inside of the truck and possibly crushed inside.
Upon the Officer’s arrival, contact was made with a water truck that had slid off of the Gerda Marsh Road (Centerline) in St. John and crashed down an embankment trapping the driver and a 6-year-old minor female in the truck.
Investigation revealed that the driver, Calvin Leando, was operating the water truck with the minor inside at a speed that exceeded the posted speed limit when he lost control of the vehicle which resulted in the crash. Leando and the minor were extracted from the truck’s cab by medical personnel. Leando suffered moderate injuries, and the minor suffered fatal wounds.
Calvin Leando was arrested on June 3, 2026, at the Richard Callwood Command and charged with Negligent Homicide, Aggravated Child Abuse & Neglect, Child Neglect, Child Abuse, Operating a vehicle with an Unrestrained Minor and Negligent Driving. He was unable to post bail of $215,000.00 and was turned over to the Bureau of Corrections.
