U.S. Virgin Islands – The VI Police Department (VIPD)/Office of Highway Safety (VIOHS) urges all residents and visitors to embrace the spirit of freedom with responsibility, especially when it comes to pedestrian safety, impaired and distracted driving, seat belt use, and speeding. As we celebrate Virgin Islands Emancipation Day and the 4th of July, it is a time to reflect on the hard-fought freedoms and the ongoing commitment to community well-being. This season of celebration is also a critical time to prioritize safety on our roads to protect every member of our community.
Important Safety Reminders for a Safe Holiday Weekend:
- Honor Our Pedestrians:
Be mindful of pedestrians, especially around gatherings and events. Slow down near crowds, and when walking, use designated crosswalks where available.
- Celebrate Without Impairment:
Never drive impaired by alcohol or drugs. Plan for a sober ride home and help keep our roads safe.
- Stay Focused — Phones Down:
Distracted driving continues to cause preventable crashes. Put your phone away while driving — no call or text is worth a life.
- Buckle Up, Every Trip:
Seat belts save lives and are the simple and proven way to protect yourself and your loved ones. Make buckling up a non-negotiable habit.
- Drive Within Speed Limits:
Speeding endangers everyone. Observe speed limits and drive safely to ensure a joyful holiday for all.
“Our community’s freedom is precious, and so is every life on our roads,” said VIOHS Director, Daphne O’Neal. “This year, let’s celebrate our heritage and independence with caution, ensuring that safety is part of all festivities.”
